Do you afraid of nightmares?
What if they can get the power to become more realistic?
Nightmares are becoming more real using AI. Google has taken the wraps off Chimera Painter, a web-based tool that can let anyone generate terrifying cryptozoological entities in an interface that appears like MS Paint by way of Diablo.
But why, you ask? Well, isn’t it obvious? No… no, I suppose it isn’t.
Surely the strangest thing to hit Google AI blog for a minimum of a month, the Chimera Painter does even have something sort of a reason for existing. The team was watching ways to accelerate the creation of art for games, which is usually fantastical and artistic. An AI assistant that would produce an inexpensive image of, say, an owlbear on the hunt, could be helpful to an artist trying to find inspiration. In 2019 Nvidia released an identical tool to get photorealistic landscape images.
To pursue this somewhat esoteric goal, the team naturally decided to create a whole fantasy digital cards where players combine animals and make them fight. So far, I feel you’ll agree this is often pretty standard stuff. The idea was that if there are 100 animals within the game, and everyone is often combined with each of the others, that quickly makes much more combinations than any artist can be expected to draw. To make an AI agent that will create arbitrary creatures, the team first trained it on extant animals and their many parts by feeding the system thousands of images of CG creatures and corresponding images labeling their parts: claws, front of leg, eyes, etc.
